In creating and advertising a new hypothetical entry in one of Dayton's premiere local breweries, I wanted to elevate the brand and its responsibility in fostering a new age of community.
The new brew, named after Dayton's involvement in the Great Miami Bike Trails, aims to tie itself with outdoor recreation in the region. My proposal leaned into the beauty of the local sunsets admired by Daytonions year-round. Though what most captivated me was the ability to pitch something beyond the scope previously inhabited by Gem City Brewery. Since the new line compliments itself with the outdoors, I suggested packaging the 6-pack with an environmentally friendly and highly sustainable compostable ring to eliminate the plastic used in conventional ones.
Design should never exist in a vacuum. Designers are in charge of thinking about the product in any way it may be interacted with, and that certainly includes how it is thrown away.
Graphic design has more influence on the operations of society than many of us designers care to admit. But each and every one of our mistakes has real-world impacts. If we do not bring the environment within the realm of our consideration, design will eventually be seen as a destructive force. It is our duty to design responsibly and future-forward.
